ALL ABOUT SCIENCE This site presents articles and videos about a wide range of scientific theories and discoveries, including the evolution of man, DNA structure, the origin of species and the theory of relativity. It is presented in a clear and straightforward way, and looks at opposing arguments about contentious subjects.

ARCHAEOLOGY.INFO This detailed site is dedicated to exploring the evolution of the human race. It covers all the archaeological materials used to trace our ancestors, and has a comprehensive glossary of terms, from acetabulo-cristal buttress to zygomaxillary ridge (look them up if you want to know!). There is also a very useful selection of briefly reviewed links to other sites dealing with evolution and archaeology.

Part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, this website “provides Arctic information and a set of reputable indicators that describe the present state of the Arctic ecosystem and climate”. It has a vast number of articles, essays, and photographs relating to all aspects of the Arctic, and is organised in a way which makes it easy to search for information on any aspect of the subject.
BBC Science and Nature

BBC SCIENCE AND NATURE
As always with the BBC website, the Science and Nature section offers a wealth of material on a wide variety of subjects concerned with Nature and Wildlife. There are articles and facts on worldwide and UK Wildlife, Conservation and Pets, video clips, screensavers and wallpapers in various sizes and resolutions, as well as a very useful, searchable Wildfacts section, and a fascinating Planet Earth Explorer.
Becoming Human

BECOMING HUMAN
Part of the Institute of Human Origins which ‘conducts, interprets and publicizes scientific research on the human career,’ this site has a series of interactive, multimedia documentaries aimed at promoting a greater understanding of human evolution. It also has an extensive glossary of terms related to the subject and links to other relevant sites.
British Trees

BRITISH TREES
Part of the Woodland Trust, this website “aims to be the definitive guide to British tree species on the Internet”. The Native Tree Guide is extensive and contains a wealth of information about habitat, uses and propagation, with clear illustrations of the leaves to aid with identification of the species. There are links to other relevant sites and an images and resources section with downloadable materials.
Dinosaur Illustrations

DINOSAUR ILLUSTRATIONS
As the title suggests, this is a catalogue of where to find illustrations of dinosaurs. There is a long list of dinosaurs, organised alphabetically, which leads to small images of the dinosaurs which serve as links to the original illustrations. The site can be searched in a variety of different ways, and the pictures, by a range of different artists, tend to be of good quality, and many of them are quite spectacular.

ENCYCLOPEDIA OF LIFE
This site is a work in progress: a global partnership between the scientific community and the general public to make freely available knowledge about all the species known to science. Anybody can register as an EOL contributor, and expert curators ensure quality by authenticating submitted materials.
Evolution

EVOLUTION This American site, part of the PBS media enterprise and an offshoot of a television miniseries, examines evolutionary science and the profound effect it has had on society and culture. Divided into seven main sections: Darwin, Change, Extinction, Survival, Sex, Humans and Religion, it is crammed with fascinating information, articles, videos and pictures covering everything from Darwin’s “dangerous idea” to a mixture of theories about the extinction of the dinosaurs.

FORESTRY COMMISSION
The Forestry Commission is “the government department responsible for the protection and expansion of Britain’s forests and woodlands… Our goal is always to ensure that, at a practical level, Britain can use its forests to contribute positively to as many of the nation’s needs as we can while sustaining this great resource for the future.” The website contains information about British wildlife, with a library of pictures and a variety of webcams, both live and archived.

IT’S NATURE This site is crammed with interesting facts and resources concerning the natural world. There are pictures, videos and wallpapers and informative articles about a whole range of subjects including endangered, extinct and legendary creatures, life in the air, on the ground, on the ice and underwater, and it certainly lives up to its claim to be a “one-stop resource for exciting and interesting information regarding nature and her creatures.”
National Geographic

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC Founded in 1888 to "increase and diffuse geographic knowledge," the National Geographic aims to inspire people to care about the planet. Its website is crammed with an amazing selection of photographs and articles about wildlife, people, space and the environment.
Natural History Museum

NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM
This website aims to promote “the discovery, understanding, enjoyment, and responsible use of the natural world.” The Nature Online section is crammed with interesting articles, pictures and videos on a wide range of subjects including “How butterfly wings shimmer”, “Exploring UK Biodiversity”, “Comets and Asteroids”, “Dinosaurs and other extinct creatures” and “What is evolution?”. There is also everything you need to know about visiting the museum itself in London.

This website is home to a stunning collection of high-quality wildlife photographs under the headings of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and fishes, insects, invertebrates, plants, mushrooms and landscapes. There are alphabetical lists of the photos in each section and a page of wallpapers which can be used freely for personal use. Many of the photos can also be sent as e-cards.
RSPB

ROYAL SOCIETY FOR THE PROTECTION OF BIRDS The website of the RSPB is, naturally enough, crammed with information about the work of the society, but it also contains a lot of very useful information about British birds, including a section about birds and wildlife, a Guide to UK birds and a “Bird Identifier” to help with identifying individual species, and also an International section. There are lots of up-to-date articles about all aspects of the society’s work, and how individuals can help or contribute.

WHALE IMAGES This website is “dedicated to bringing you information and quality pictures of various species of whales and dolphins.” The information is extensive and well presented and the pictures, some of which are quite breathtaking, are of a good quality. There are also links to pictures of other animals and birds on HickerPhoto, with which this site appears to be closely associated.

WILD ABOUT BRITAIN “This website is home to hundreds of thousands of pages about British wildlife, the Environment and the Great Outdoors; from birds, butterflies, fungi and trees to climate change, marine life, astronomy and the weather.” It is divided into the following areas: Astronomy, Birds, Butterflies, Fungi, Geography, Herpetofauna, Insects, Mammals, Trees, Water Life, Weather and Wildflowers. Each area has several sub-sections, and links to other relevant websites.

This site claims to be “The Net’s premier source of affordable wildlife stock photos, wildlife info, and resources”, and contains a wealth of often beautiful photos of African wildlife, many of which are free for personal, non-commercial, educational and conservation purposes. The photo galleries are divided by species, and the quality of the photos is very good indeed. It also contains sections with information about Wildlife, Photos, Safaris and Art.
